Juror’s Statement
It has been a pleasure to serve as the guest juror for the Arizona Biennial 2020. This prestigious exhibition of Arizona’s outstanding artists has been and continues to be a much-anticipated showcase for contemporary art. At this time of a global pandemic, as the very fabric of the American dream unravels, the artist’s voice sounds the alarm for what may be a very different world. Many of the participating artists address the challenges we face as a nation, including cultural inequities, domestic violence, gender politics, and environmental threats. Art is a path to freedom, emancipation, and equity. At other times, it is simply a comfort in an upside-down world. To all of the artists who submitted their work for consideration, I thank you. From 1,351 entries, 88 works were selected and presented here. New restrictions regarding social distancing and COVID-19 related safe practices prevented some works from consideration. The Tucson Museum of Art is to be commended for its decision to present the AZ Biennial in spite of these new considerations.
In selecting work for the exhibition, of primary consideration was personal voice. Works with lively content and experimentation were consistently most engaging. Overall, I was most impressed by a spirit of innovation that was present in much of the work I reviewed.
I thank the Tucson Museum of Art for their invitation to jury this exhibition, and join the museum in thanking all the artists who entered work for consideration. My special thanks extend to Dr. Julie Sasse, Chief Curator, and her staff, who organized the process flawlessly in this new world of Zoom, and provided invaluable insight, guidance, and humor throughout the process.
