The American Southwest encompasses many things, among them culture, landscape, light, and history. Works in this gallery are selections from 1970 to the present from the museum’s permanent collection by contemporary artists who have lived or live in the region and contribute to the artistic discourse of the area. Some directly address the clichés and real events that describe the Southwest, while others respond to its physical properties through observations and impressions. Others, while hailing from the area, go beyond the confines of place to address world issues, the human condition, and formal artistic concerns. Artists of the Southwest are diverse in ethnicity, religion, and country of origin, and create a broad picture of the creative spirit from the region.
