The American Southwest and Western Traditions

Count Ferdinand Von Galen Gallery

Exhibition Dates:
Ongoing

The American Southwest embodies diverse cultures, traditions, and histories that can be understood through art of the past and present. This gallery features regional art of the Southwest from the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block collection by artists who spent time or were influenced by Arizona and the surrounding area, experiencing the region first hand.

Contemporary approaches to art of the American West are very diverse. However, one can find common subjects and similar themes. The “heroic cowboy” or “Native American warrior” have continued to grace canvases for well over a century. Over time, stereotypes and misconceptions about people in the West have emerged. Throughout this gallery, notice the array of subjects and media used. Are the artists recreating, perpetuating, or commenting upon known Western characters or developing new ones?
