Patrick Martinez (b. 1980, Pasadena, CA) grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, a suburban LA neighborhood, and comes from a diverse cultural background (Filipino, Mexican, and Native American). Influenced by urban culture and the Hip Hop movement, Martinez’s art practice includes a wide variety of media (graffiti, painting, neon, ceramic and sculpture), and colorfully scrutinizes otherwise everyday realities of suburban and urban life in L.A. and popular culture. The empire is falling, sweetly, is Martinez’s first solo museum exhibition in the American Southwest. The show will include a selection of paintings, neon works, memorials, and sculptural cakes that unearths the artists’ depiction of a fading American promise.
